The San Patricio County Commissioners Court voted to adopt a resolution urging the Texas Legislature to exempt counties, county officials and employees from the state hotel occupancy tax when traveling on official business.
The acting judge read the resolution into the record, which argues that current law forces counties to pay state hotel-occupancy taxes from revenues generated by local property taxes, a practice the resolution calls "tax churn" that increases the financial burden on local property taxpayers. The resolution says the exemption would align counties with other government and nonprofit entities already exempt under state law.
The court moved to approve the resolution and recorded a unanimous voice vote. The resolution directs that a copy be forwarded to the local members of the Texas Legislature and to the Texas Association of Counties for distribution and advocacy.
