Ellis County to replace two jail rooftop chillers after freeze damage; insurance claim pending

The court authorized replacement of two rooftop chillers at the Ellis County Jail, not to exceed $625,000, using Texas Air Systems contract numbers 25010501 and 2501502. The chair explained that freeze events earlier in the year caused piping to freeze and burst, which allowed water to enter refrigerant lines and rendered both chillers inoperable. The county submitted an insurance claim and is renting temporary chillers while the replacements are procured.
"We have submitted an insurance claim... we hope to receive the reimbursement. But in the meantime, we obviously need air conditioning at the jail, and we are renting temporary chillers," the chair said. Commissioners approved the replacement authorization unanimously.
