Medical director warns of national measles surge; local flu numbers rising

Medical Director Dr. Beyer briefed the board on national measles activity, reporting that total measles cases for 2025 were 2,267 and that from Jan. 1–29, 2026 there were 588 confirmed U.S. cases. He told the board that "94% have been in unvaccinated" people and said Michigan had seen no cases so far in 2026 but that the nation is in jeopardy of losing measles elimination status.
Epidemiologist Sara Palmer also reported that influenza activity is increasing and reiterated vaccination recommendations; she noted that there have been 58 pediatric flu deaths nationally. The department emphasized routine prevention measures, surveillance and public outreach as primary responses.
