Florence County Council approves three one-year agricultural leases

Florence County Council on March 19 approved three one-year leases of county-owned agricultural parcels to local farmers, a set of routine agreements the council said reduces county maintenance responsibilities while keeping land in active cultivation.
The clerk published the resolutions and council voted to adopt each. For the 42-acre parcel (Tax Map 00298-31-010) the council approved a lease to Greer Farms LLC at $40 per acre, yielding an annual rent of $1,680. The 59-acre parcel (Tax Map 00306-01-010) was approved for lease to George Harrington at $35 per acre (annual rent $2,065). The third lease approved covered 112 acres (Tax Map 00306-01-042) to Clint Moore at $15 per acre (annual rent $1,680). The clerk read the lease terms and annual payments during the meeting.
Council members emphasized the county’s preference to lease parcels for a single year as many are designated economic-development properties and some parcels need reclamation. One member noted the lower rate on the 112-acre parcel reflected significant reclamation work: "...this last parcel has got to be a lot of reclamation on that," the council member said, adding that the farming tenant would likely be doing the county a favor by farming the overgrown land.
All three motions passed on voice votes. The council recorded that lessees must make any required repairs to field roads at their expense during the lease terms.
