Superintendent highlights full-campus evacuation drills; district pursuing SRO MOU to reduce overtime costs

Superintendent Dr. Becky Meyer told the board the district has completed large-scale evacuation and reunification drills, including a recent full-campus exercise at the county fairgrounds with sheriff and police participation. Meyer described the drills as increasingly sophisticated and said they are run on a rotating three-year schedule so each school receives a full drill over the cycle.
"These drills — are built from the I Love U Pikes platform. They're consistent, proven practices," Meyer said, adding the exercises aim to provide families the quickest, calmest reunification in an incident. She said the district will run two additional full-campus drills in the spring (dates not released publicly) to continue the work.
Meyer also reported staff have discussed a memorandum of understanding with local law enforcement to limit paid SRO coverage to student days (an estimated 168 days) and avoid paying for nonstudent days and overtime, which she said could yield roughly 15 to 20 percent in annual savings while maintaining student coverage. The board acknowledged an award won by SRO Tom Little for safety and security work and discussed additional safety investments such as exterior window film.
