Trustees hear survey showing 69.9% support for four‑day week but call for more outreach

A trustee presented results from a district survey showing that 69.9% of respondents favored a 40‑hour, four‑day school week while 30.1% opposed it, but trustees cautioned the sample was small and incomplete and recommended further outreach before any decision.

"And, of the 73 responses, 69.9% were in favor of a 40 a week, 30.1% were against," the superintendent (speaker 4) told the board, noting the survey was distributed through the district Messenger system and collected 73 responses. The presenter urged caution, saying the results include staff and families and there is no reliable separation of respondent types.

Parent Tyrell Stevenson (speaker 8) voiced concern that shortening the week could "compromise" the district's gains, saying, "I'm really concerned that it takes all of those achievements and compromises them." Another commenter (Tom, speaker 10) raised equity concerns, warning that reduced in‑school time could hurt students who rely on school for meals and supports and questioned reducing use of community investments in school facilities.

Trustees discussed ways to get a broader sample, including mailing surveys to households. Several trustees framed the current conversation as an initial step, not a decision: "This is a very beginning conversation," a trustee (speaker 5) said, urging ongoing discussion and more data collection.
