Sheriff Criner asked the court to declare June 19 (Juneteenth) a county holiday to recognize the day. Tax Assessor-Collector Mary Helen Bowers said she could not operate her office with a skeleton crew; County Judge Terry Johnson said closing the courthouse for one day would cost “over a quarter of a million dollars” and suggested swapping this holiday with another. Commissioner Steven Villela said Juneteenth is an important holiday in Texas and urged further discussion.
County Judge Johnson also noted that county holidays must be set before Oct. 1 as required by statute, and County Judge Executive Administrator Jenny Hilton reiterated that statutory timing. Commissioners agreed to gather more employee feedback and work on a county policy; the court took no formal action at the meeting.
There was no motion or vote recorded to declare Juneteenth a county holiday during this session.
