Extension agents report youth participation, new shooting-sports and school garden work in quarterly update

County extension staff Carrie Sharp and a colleague presented the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension combined quarterly report for January'March and highlighted youth and school programming, training, and outreach.
"We had 82 kids that traveled to all the livestock shows," Carrie Sharp said, listing Fort Worth, San Antonio, San Angelo, Houston and Austin among the events and noting some participants even competed at the Cattlemen's Congress in Oklahoma. She described expansion of programming including a new shotgun team (with background-checked leaders), robotics kits, archery partnerships with local schools and a Farm Bureau grant supporting a raised-bed garden demonstration at Forney Johnson Elementary.
Staff also reported 162 active participants in a workplace walking program for county employees and described preserving-the-harvest canning classes and other workshops. Commissioners thanked extension staff for the work and moved to approve the combined quarterly report.
The agents asked staff to help photograph gardens and outreach activities for the county website; the court agreed and approved the report by motion.
