County approves TxDOT permit request to add culvert at CR 175 and FM 626 to reduce ponding

Karnes County's Road & Bridge Engineer Wayne told the Commissioners Court May 13 that recent road work on County Road 175 routed more stormwater into the FM 626 intersection, causing ponding and a potential hydroplaning hazard.
Wayne said the county would pursue a TxDOT permit to install culverts and do ditch cleaning to better move water away from the intersection. "It'll probably be an 18 inch, culvert," Wayne said, and estimated the runs would be about "50 to 60 feet." He told the court the county would follow TxDOT specifications so that, if accepted into the state's inventory, the state could maintain the installation in the future.
Commissioners discussed planning with TxDOT, noting the state sometimes needs advance notice for major work but has cooperated when county design precedes state improvements. A motion to approve the permit request and proceed with the culvert installation was moved, seconded and carried.
The court instructed staff to pursue the permit and to coordinate any hydraulic studies or advance planning to avoid repeatedly retrofitting curbs or culverts along state right-of-way in future projects.
