The Winston‑Dillard School District board on Tuesday held a first reading of a proposed personal electronic device policy that would prohibit student use of personal devices "from the start of regular instructional hours until the end of regular instructional hours except as provided below," a staff presenter said. The policy would allow devices to be stored in lockers or backpacks but not on students' persons during instruction and would impose a progressive discipline ladder for repeat noncompliance.
The board discussed the timing and scope of exemptions. A board member asked whether a denied exemption should allow resubmission after 12 months or at the end of the school year; the chair agreed to change the language to allow resubmission at the end of the current school year. The district staff urged board members to review the full packet and indicated a second reading and possible adoption are planned for the Oct. 8 board meeting, with implementation slated for Jan. 1.
