Equity CDC updates commissioners on self-help center repairs and new $1.2M reconstruction match for colonias

Rob Stevenson, representing Equity Community Development Corporation, updated the court on the Self Help Center program and housing rehabilitation and reconstruction in Cameron County’s colonias.
Stevenson described the program’s HUD CDBG funding stream and state administration, listed the five colonias targeted under the contract (Santa Maria, Olmito, Valle Hermosa, Royal Colorado Estates and one in Willacy County), and summarized recent work: six reconstructions completed under the older contract (five in Sebastian) and multiple housing rehabilitations (roofs, foundations, ramps, accessibility improvements). He said current expenditures are about two-thirds of the prior contract and that approximately $215,000 remained. The new contract is at the environmental review stage and will include stick-and-brick reconstructions because the Cameron County Housing Finance Corporation is matching $600,000 to Equity's $600,000 for a combined $1.2M reconstruction pool.
Stevenson and commissioners discussed leveraging additional grant programs (TDHCA barrier-removal, USDA 504) to extend assistance; the court thanked Equity CDC for the presentation and approved the recommended acknowledgment/motion. Staff asked precincts to help get the word out to eligible residents.
