Commissioners pledge $100,000 in seed money for a permanent Big Bend Public Library in South County

Dale Weiss, representing the Big Bend Public Library and the Big Bend Citizens Alliance (BBCA), asked the county for a $100,000 initial seed contribution to purchase and site a modular library building in South County. Weiss said the total project cost is about $200,000; the BBCA and local partners expect to raise the matching $100,000 and provide site prep and many volunteer resources.
“We're asking the county for a $100,000 as initial seed money for a $200,000 project cost,” Weiss said, describing a modular RemTech building, an existing catalog of about 3,000 books, plans for digital assets and programming, and a target to be on the ground in roughly 100 days once fundraising and approvals begin. Weiss said the proposed site, Canyon View Community Park, is adjacent to a school and has utilities and parking.
Commissioners discussed fiscal protections and asked the group to sign an agreement that spells out stewardship and operating responsibilities; the County Judge said the county would be last-in, last-out on funding and would restrict county funds accordingly. The court voted to allocate $100,000 subject to contract terms and return for formal agreement approval.
