Cameron County’s Juvenile Justice Department presented its FY2027 budget submission during the May 19 meeting and asked Commissioners Court to acknowledge the filing required under TAC §140.004.
The chief (speaker 12) told the judge and commissioners the department is proposing a 1.6% increase to cover food for residents and related program costs and a separate 1.96% increase to reflect higher medication (psychotropic) and medical expenses. The department also requested that paid overtime for staff working county holidays be included for direct-care personnel; the chief said jailers had been previously compensated and asked for parity for juvenile direct-care staff. The department noted continuation of the Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program and reported no major issues in the past year.
Commissioners clarified that the court’s acknowledgment is the statutory submission and not final budget adoption; the acknowledgment was approved on a motion by Commissioner Lopez with Commissioner Benavides seconding. The chief and staff will proceed with the formal budget process.
