Cameron County honors three Brownsville ISD campuses as Healthy South Texas schools

Cameron County Commissioners Court presented proclamations May 19 recognizing three Brownsville Independent School District campuses as 2025–26 Healthy South Texas recognized schools.

The county judge read each proclamation and noted student and adult participation metrics supplied by program partners. For Annie S. Putenette Elementary the court noted 161 student completions of the youth “Learn, Grow, Eat, Go” curriculum and a student Walk Across Texas total of 7,982.82 miles. Daniel Breeden Elementary was credited with 49 youth program completions and 200 students participating in Walk Across Texas, producing 150 miles toward the statewide milestone. Champion Elementary reported 295 students completing the youth balancing-food-and-play curriculum and 300 students logging 2,356.25 miles.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension staff and school representatives accepted the proclamations and brought examples of student projects, including produce and classroom-incubated chickens, which drew applause from the bench. County leaders praised the schools’ health and nutrition efforts; the court voted to acknowledge the presentations on a motion by Commissioner Garza, seconded by Commissioner Lopez. The court’s action was procedural acknowledgment of the proclamations; no county funding action was taken.
