Board hears schools’ fears of shootings and rising student substance use

Orange County Commissioner Lacey Trimble reported on Oct. 9 that multiple school districts told the County Team they are seeing increased student anxiety tied to fear of school shootings and rising substance use among students and parents.
Trimble said one district’s survey found 80% of participating students listed fear of school shootings as the principal source of anxiety. She added that Highland Falls credited added ADAC prevention services funded through the county’s opioid settlement dollars for support after the recent death of a student in a car crash; Superintendent Monahan thanked the Disaster Mental Health team for on-site support.
Board members discussed school safety and prevention as part of LGU planning and noted transportation and resource gaps when regional stabilization centers are distant from Orange County.
