County parks: Pools busy during heat wave; lifeguard staffing sufficient for now

Acting Commissioner Peter Tartaglia told the committee that Westchester County pools and beaches performed well during the recent heat wave: attendance was high, some sites stayed open an hour later on peak days, and staff managed crowds and minor heat-related medical issues without facility closures. "If anything did well over the holiday weekend, it was our pools and beaches," Tartaglia said.
On staffing, Tartaglia said the department currently has a strong supply of lifeguards aided by year-round recruitment, training and a recent policy allowing experienced 15-year-olds to start as trainees; nevertheless, he warned that mid-August staffing churn is normal as students return to school and college. He described training rotations and cross-site assignments to cover waterfront and pool certifications.
