County parks officials: Muirstead farmhouse Phase 1 about 30% complete; repairs revealed major foundation and mold issues

County parks officials briefed the committee on progress and setbacks at Muirstead’s farmhouse restoration, saying Phase 1 exterior “enveloping” work is about 30% complete but that crews uncovered unforeseen conditions that will affect scope and cost. "We’re about 30% complete on the work that we want to accomplish in Phase 1," Acting Commissioner Peter Tartaglia said, and he added that the county may request more funding during the Phase 2 construction bond request expected in February 2027.
Director of Park Planning Rob Lopane described site findings in the older portion of the house: a crumbling stone foundation where timbers had ground contact, widespread wood rot in sill plates, and mold that spread further than the initial assessment. Lopane said the team will underpin and install a new foundation under problem areas, complete masonry repairs and waterproofing, and that interior demolition will remove much of the mold. He also said asbestos was found in the chimney (asbestos in the basement was remediated earlier) and will require additional remediation work before interior renovation begins.
