The Summit County Public Art Advisory Board voted on Feb. 4 to decline a donated 1898 upright grand piano offered for the Art Pianos For All project. Thea Henney presented the offer from donor Sherri Smoot and relayed a tuner’s assessment that the instrument could not be tuned to perfect pitch and was roughly a half step flat — a condition that would limit its use in ensemble programming. The piano’s dimensions are 58.5 inches long, 28.5 inches deep and 56 inches high; estimated delivery costs range from $300–$450, which the donor said she would not cover.
Board members discussed the piano’s condition and programming needs; Jenny moved to decline the donation and Betsey seconded. The motion carried unanimously at 5:02 p.m. The board indicated a preference to wait for an instrument that can be used with PC Opera, USUO and other musicians so the Art Pianos program will support performance opportunities.
