Permitting department wins pay increases; fee changes expected to cover costs

Rusty, the county permitting official, told commissioners that permitting fees would rise and that the department is proposing inspector salaries of about $70,000 (one at $68,000) and a higher salary for an office manager who is training to be certified as an inspector. He said the permitting office currently handles more than 1,600 permits per year with six employees and that the new fee schedule should offset much of the additional payroll cost.
Commissioners expressed support for professionalizing permitting services and for using fee revenue to cover the increases. Commissioner Holt moved to approve the permitting department’s recommendations; the motion was seconded and carried on a 5–0 vote. Staff said the new permitting fees remain lower than many surrounding counties even after the change.
