Brewster County weighs replacing emergency-management vehicle after transmission failure

At a Feb. 19 special meeting, the Brewster County Commissioners Court discussed a 10-year-old Dodge used by emergency management whose transmission failed, and whether to repair it or buy a used replacement. Chair (S2) said Enterprise had offered a 2025 Ford Explorer for about $45,300 and that dealers were pressing to unload those vehicles; "They want 15,000 to fix it. It's not worth it," Chair (S2) said.
Commissioners and staff debated the vehicle's capabilities for off-road and highway use and whether a higher-clearance truck would be more appropriate. The sheriff indicated he would take the vehicle for highway traffic control if the court approved the replacement. Chair (S2) moved to proceed with further research and return with a recommendation; the court approved the motion by voice vote and asked staff to investigate alternatives (including a Ford F-150 or other higher-clearance models) and to report back with cost and suitability information.
