County to spend $6,000 with Daughters group to restore Maple Creek cemetery

The Community & Services Committee on July 28 approved a $6,000 service agreement with the Augusta chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution to create and maintain a small cemetery and adjacent park in Maple Creek.
Staff (Scott Johnson) told commissioners the agreement covers restoration and ongoing maintenance. Chair (speaker 1) said he visited the site after a resident’s request and found the cemetery overgrown and without a water tap; "they were carrying water with buckets because they didn't have a water tap," he said, noting part of the money will help install a tap and create a garden to preserve local history.
Committee members moved the item on consent and the motion carried without recorded roll call. The county described the project as preserving a Revolutionary War patriot's gravesite and investing in a small community green space. The agreement was presented as a one‑time service contract and staff recommended approval.
