Yates County historian outlines 250th-anniversary plan; state grant and county seed funding noted

County Historian Len Kataskas told the Government Operations Committee that local organizers have begun planning events for the 250th anniversary of American independence and that the county has received $15,000 from the state and $1,000 from the county toward celebrations.
Len Kataskas, Yates County Historian, told the Government Operations Committee on Jan. 5 that the county’s historical office has set three priorities for 2026, including organizing local events for the 250th anniversary of American independence. Kataskas said a local planning committee has already met twice and reported $15,000 in state funding and $1,000 from Yates County to support the anniversary events.
Kataskas also said the office plans to host the Region 11 Conference of the Association of Public Historians of New York State and will research and write an article on Revolutionary War veteran John Blair, who is buried at Pine Corner Cemetery in Rushville and served the county after the war. The committee accepted the historian’s report as information; Chair Pat Killen registered no objection to forwarding related informational items.
