Goshen resolution raised confusion over caves after county clarifies RFP boundaries

Officials told the Dutchess Quarry Sites National Register District Management Committee on Sept. 24 that the Town of Goshen passed a resolution concerning the property but never forwarded it to the county, and that the town appeared to have been operating under a misunderstanding about what the RFP covered.
County Attorney Richard B. Golden said the towns leadership thought the sale area covered the caves and their buffer, but he clarified that neither the caves nor the buffer were included in the parcel that had been described for sale. Chairman Leigh J. Benton said he had similar conversations with the town supervisor and had not heard back after clarifying the area involved, suggesting there is currently no active local bid to acquire cave lands from the county.
Golden said the RFP had been pulled and that the request for proposals was not intended to authorize further mining on county property. The clarification leaves the countys cave-protection aim unchanged: Benton said the committee needs to protect the caves by limiting access.
