CSB highlights Student Lifeline Act and 988 implications during Suicide Prevention Month

Orange County officials told the Community Services Board that the Student Lifeline Act requires colleges to put 988 information on student IDs by 2025 and warned the county Crisis Call Center/311 may see increased 988 call volume as a state awareness campaign rolls out.
At the Sept. 11 meeting, Commissioner Lacey Trimble told the board that the Student Lifeline Act requires campus ID cards to include 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline information by 2025. Trimble said the state will run a 'We Hear You' public-awareness campaign and cautioned that Orange County’s Crisis Call Center/311— which also answers 988 calls—could see higher call volumes as a result.
The board noted September is National Suicide Prevention Month and the county is supporting an Out of the Darkness walk on Sept. 22, 2024, to raise funds and awareness. Trimble linked these outreach activities to broader prevention and crisis response planning, including staff training at SUNY Orange and county participation in national events.
