County endorses nomination of George H. Mahon Federal Building to National Register

The Lubbock County Commissioners Court voted to forward the nomination of the George H. Mahon Federal Building and United States Courthouse to the Keeper of the National Register of Historic Places.
Cameron Saffel, chair of the Lubbock County Historical Commission and the county's certified local government committee, told the Court the Mahon Federal Building recently passed the 50-year threshold that makes it eligible for listing. "The Mahon Federal Building recently passed its 50 in age mark, which made it eligible for the National Register of Historic Places," Saffel said, and the committee "reviewed the nomination paperwork" and offered only minor suggestions.
The nomination covers the building at 1205 Texas Avenue in Lubbock. Saffel said the General Services Administration had determined the property was eligible under local and state criteria, and the local committee recommended the Court adopt its report and forward the nomination to the Keeper of the National Register. The court approved the recommendation by motion and voice vote.
The action is an administrative concurrence under the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 review process for federally owned property; the Court's vote forwards the locally reviewed nomination to the federal keeper for final action.
