The Lubbock County Commissioners Court unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing April 2026 as Child Abuse Awareness Month after a presentation by Carla Olsen of the South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention.
Olsen briefed the court on the "Go Blue Lubbock" awareness campaign, which the coalition has run for 15 years. She said regional data show Lubbock County has a high rate of confirmed child-abuse victims and presented decade-long figures. "In the last 10 years, 10,000 Lubbock County children have been confirmed by investigation as victims of child abuse and neglect," Olsen said, and added that 24 children died as fatalities of abuse and neglect during that period. The court read the proclamation and encouraged citizens to wear blue during April to raise awareness.
Commissioners urged community vigilance and reporting. "If you see something, say something," one commissioner said during the discussion. The court expressed appreciation for the coalition's work and approved the proclamation to support public education and coordinated prevention efforts.
