Residents praise convenience but press for brick, better dumpster screening at Dollar General hearing

At the Oct. 9 meeting the Planning Commission heard public comment in support of the proposed Dollar General Market but also received specific requests about the store's appearance and waste handling.
Edith Dalton, who identified herself and gave an address on Baltimore Road, said she and her husband of 53 years welcome a nearby store. "The convenience of a Dollar General store to all of our residents ... is a plus for this area," Dalton said. Other commenters echoed the view that the store would reduce long drives for small purchases but urged the applicant to provide higher‑quality materials and to address concerns they observed at other local stores.
Commissioners and applicant representatives discussed standard dumpster screening (applicant said 12 by 18) and the possibility of expanding the enclosure or adding taller screening. The applicant said some solutions could conflict with loading and life‑safety access and that full screening may not always be practical, but they offered to proffer expanded screening where feasible and to produce alternative elevations showing more brick within budget constraints.
