Wood Village names Baptist Church 2024 Community Member of the Year

The Wood Village City Council voted Dec. 10 to award its 2024 Community Member of the Year to Wood Village Baptist Church, citing decades of volunteer service, food programs and long-standing partnership with city events.
Staff presented four nominees, including Maria Guadalupe Hera Flores, a monthly food pantry volunteer; Vera Hallman, a toy-drive coordinator; the Reynolds CTP program; and the Wood Village Baptist Church. Councilors discussed options to recognize both an organization and individual volunteers. "I moved to award the 2024 community member of the year award to the Wood Village Baptist Church," Councilor Tan said before the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Council staff said the city will coordinate with the church to arrange a plaque and a gift-card package valued at about $250 to a local restaurant; council discretionary funds were offered to supplement the award if needed. The recognition will be recorded on the perpetual plaque and celebrated at a future meeting in January.
The decision followed staff notes about the nominees’ volunteer work — food distribution, toy drives, park support and other neighborhood services — and council members emphasized the benefit of recognizing both institution-level contributions and individual volunteers.
