Residents and local academics told the Cameron County Commissioners Court on March 24 they oppose proposed tax abatement agreements for a company identified in the record as Ceronic/Ceramic/Seronic Technologies.
Dr. Christopher Basaldú, who identified himself at the podium, said the company is a weapons and autonomous‑AI manufacturer and urged the court not to give tax breaks: "This is evil, and we need to resist it, not ... give them tax breaks," he said, adding that residents have 30 days to organize and oppose the abatement notice. Dr. Etienne Rosas, a researcher and former congressional candidate, warned that courting resource‑intensive and defense‑adjacent industries risks the Rio Grande Valley's environment and economy and urged the commissioners to "reject these tax abatements." Both speakers said local officials had not sufficiently consulted indigenous groups and other stakeholders.
After hearing public comment and staff briefing, the court voted to table the immediate public hearing on the listed abatement applications. County staff subsequently asked the court to authorize publication of a new notice and proposed a June 2, 2026 hearing date; the court approved publication and authorized the County Judge to sign the notice. The court did not take a final vote on any abatement during the March 24 meeting.
What happens next: the county will publish the June 2 notice and hold a scheduled public hearing. Members of the public who spoke asked residents and community groups to use the notice window to organize and submit comments to the record.
