Council adopts multiple Gateway 76 zoning map amendments and text changes

As part of a larger Gateway 76 project, council approved a long series of zoning map amendments and text changes affecting properties in the East Highway 76 area; staff described the changes as county-requested and multiple ordinances were approved on voice vote.
Council considered and adopted a large package of zoning and map amendment ordinances associated with the Gateway 76 planning effort. Staff explained that many of the map amendments were requested by Florence County to implement the gateway study; the items included zoning changes to Commercial Mixed Use (CMU), general commercial (B-3), industrial, multifamily and other districts, along with text amendments to the county zoning code.
The council adopted the ordinances after brief staff explanations and voice votes; some items were amended on the floor before passage. Yoakam explained the Gateway 76 process and noted staff would follow up with any remaining properties pending planning commission review.
The package of ordinances is intended to implement corridor overlay district rules and to set zoning for properties along Highway 76 and adjacent areas; council members said the project will guide future development. Because the changes cover many parcels and ordinance numbers, staff will publish the final ordinance package and maps in the county record and on the planning office web pages.
