Alpine official briefs Brewster County on utility billing, tourism events and new golf-cart rules

A City of Alpine representative told the Brewster County Commissioners Court the city is still reconciling utility-billing issues and has a five-step action plan and temporary staff support to address outstanding accounts. "We've actually hired some interns to help us go work all that," the representative said, noting the reconciliation could take a couple more months.

The representative described several tourism and planning items: the Texas Downtown Association regional roundtable scheduled the week of July 4–11, a new city logo emphasizing dark-sky principles that includes "Brewster County" on the seal, and a 30-year agreement with a university (transcript named "Salt Loss State University") tied to project work near the Coconut Lodge. He said the city hopes to use additional effluent to recharge a nearby creek area and create a bird habitat, and that an evaluation RFP for an animal incinerator is pending approval by city council.

City staff also reported the city recently passed a second and final reading of a golf-cart ordinance permitting golf carts and similar low-speed vehicles on city streets (with licensing, inspections and a midnight curfew). The representative said registrations should begin immediately and noted county signage and enforcement questions: commissioners asked staff to coordinate signage marking city limits so motorists and cart users know where municipal rules apply.
