"The majority of our staff and our community learned of the new policy at the last board meeting when you were all presented with a 1st read," Nelson said. She told the board that extending passing time from four to five minutes would amount to roughly two full days of lost instruction and would reduce elementary specials from 40 minutes to 34 minutes, harming music and concert preparation.
Nelson also criticized the policy’s tiered discipline steps, saying they place the burden of communication and discipline primarily on teachers and counselors: "This policy puts the complete discipline, and the implementation of it on the teachers and the counselor." She asked trustees to either vote against the proposal or table it for further discussion with staff.
A written note from Anna Whitland, read into the record, made similar scheduling points and recommended keeping the bell schedule as is to avoid compressing elementary specials and interfering with concert prep.
Trustee Ellie moved to table policy 3055; Superintendent Scott seconded the motion. The board voted in favor by voice and the motion to table passed, removing the item from immediate consideration. No formal recorded roll-call tally was provided in the meeting minutes.
