Board approves rear-setback variance for lakeside shed roof extension

The Brown County Board of Zoning Appeals approved Docket 26-VAR-03 on March 25, 2026, allowing Harold Construction on behalf of Charles and Michelle Sawyer to reroof and extend the roof of an existing 8-by-10-foot shed toward the lakeside, which creates a reduced rear setback.
Staff explained that because the work is an extension of the roof rather than a simple repair, it is treated as new construction and therefore must meet setback requirements; staff also noted other nearby reduced rear setbacks and recommended approval. Kayla told the board 23 notice cards were sent and 17 were returned. No petitioner appeared in person at the hearing and board members said they had no objections based on precedent and the minimal scope of the proposed work.
A motion to approve docket 26-VAR-03 passed on roll call. Staff said it would notify the applicants in writing.
