Sheriff’s office seeks vehicles, SWAT gear and radios; county to apply for SB22 funds

Sheriff’s office representatives and county staff presented a large package of vehicle, equipment and safety requests during the Aug. 15 budget workshop.
Kim reviewed requests across several sheriff‑office departments — dispatch needs (chairs, headsets, a 911 recorder upgrade), SWAT gear (helmets, gas masks, ballistic shields) and patrol equipment — and discussed vehicle purchases. Patrol initially requested a larger package of police‑package Durango vehicles with an estimated purchase cost above $600,000; after locating some radios the requested count was reduced from 12 to six and outfitting costs were discussed separately.
Brianna told the court the county intends to apply for SB22 grant funds and that staff will place the authorization to apply on the Aug. 20 agenda to allow the county attorney, district attorney and sheriff’s office to pursue those grants. "It's 500,000," she said referring to available SB22 funds. Staff noted SB22 funds cover equipment and have eligibility criteria; commissioners asked for clarity on application timing and matching requirements. Several departments also identified potential ARPA funding or other grant sources for particular items.
