Board hears progress on carrier redundancy, selective-router work and Starlink installation

Staff described efforts to reduce single-carrier outage risk and move Elko County toward a virtual selective router that would allow call-originating carriers to direct traffic to county endpoints. Lee said NGA has provided a form letter and contact list for carriers and that the work is carrier-dependent; he referenced FCC-related timelines and said, “I believe it's 6 months, to get the switch done and get us the data and the format that we can receive it in.”
The board discussed recent outages and redundancy measures. Staff said most recent 911 outages were carrier-based (cut lines) and noted scheduled DPS maintenance can also temporarily take systems offline. To increase resilience, staff reported adding two cellular routers, Beehive broadband, and a satellite Internet option; Lee said, “So we now have Starlink installed,” as part of redundancy measures. Members agreed that broader participation by cities and agencies would make a county server or routing change more feasible.
