Potter County adopted a new exempt-employee overtime exception policy intended to allow overtime pay to salaried (exempt) staff when the county can be reimbursed by an outside agency or contract, and to limit department-head assignments absent an emergency.
Melinda presented the policy, saying it responds to requests related to fire, rescue and law enforcement assignments that are reimbursable (for example, mutual-aid TIFMAS assignments). The policy includes a mechanism for exempt employees to receive overtime only where the county can be reimbursed and generally limits department heads to two assignments unless an emergency is declared and the county judge is notified. "This is just in response to the request to provide a policy in regards to allowing the exempt employees to receive overtime," Melinda said. The court voted 5–0 to approve the policy as presented.
The policy will be distributed to departments and the county will monitor reimbursable assignments to ensure compliance with the new limits and documentation requirements.
