Court adopts 90-day outdoor burning ban amid severe drought

Bexar County Commissioners on Oct. 29 adopted an order imposing a 90-day restriction on outdoor burning after county fire and emergency management officials reported severe drought conditions.
Chris Lopez, the county’s fire marshal and emergency management coordinator, told the court the Keetch-Byram drought index is up near 683 and recommended a ban that would also limit certain types of fireworks sales during the period. Commissioner Clay Flores moved approval and the court voted to adopt the order.
Officials said the ban could be revisited if "significant rainfall" occurs before the 90 days elapse and noted that the period includes New Year holiday activity. The order is effective on adoption.
