Students and staff from Riverside High School presented the districtcareer-and-technical business-and-marketing program and displayed student work including tote bags, banners and shirts.
"The business club has grossed about, $7,500 in revenue," student Val Bonner told the board, describing how students learned Adobe Illustrator, invoicing and client communication through real projects. Teachers and the program lead said the revenue pays for ink, supplies and machine maintenance and that the program plans an online store to expand sales.
Dr. Spencer Iams introduced the presentation and invited Mike Mitchell, the program implementer, to explain how the pathway uses industry-standard machinery and connects students to the public. Mitchell described student portfolios and the districtplan to establish a separate account so program earnings can be reinvested in equipment and upgrades.
Board members praised the studentswork and the program's practical focus. Vice Chair Wyatt asked how local businesses could contract with the class; Mitchell pointed the board to a district phone extension and an RHS business email address that will handle orders and inquiries.
The presentation also included student descriptions of upcoming events (plays, competitions) and athletics, and the board recognized adults and grant writers who helped secure machines used in the program.
