BLM updates Elko District on SWIP North transmission and West Wendover land conveyance

Brady Owens, acting field manager for the BLM Wells field office, told the advisory committee the office is advancing SWIP North — a major transmission project that requires geotechnical drilling, listed‑species preconstruction surveys and review of construction, operations and maintenance plans. "We are also doing kind of pre‑construction surveys for listed species... there's geotechnical work that's going to be needing to be done," Owens said.
On land conveyance, Owens described a legislative directive from earlier congressional action that led to identifying roughly 4,000 acres as suitable for industrial use south of West Wendover after cultural‑resource review. He said the BLM will convey lands to local municipalities through the patenting process (including mineral rights where no significant minerals exist) and compared the expected process to prior conveyances that were used to build an industrial park in Wells. Committee members asked about water rights for the parcel and Owens said the BLM does not convey water rights as part of those realty actions.
