Staff requested and the board approved a $56,744.25 contract with Rick Hendrick Chevrolet of Norfolk for a Chevrolet Silverado to serve as the fire marshal's staff vehicle. Staff said the vehicle in stock would avoid a January 2025 order delay and a 20‑week upfitting wait. Separately, the board approved purchasing two 3,000‑gallon stock tanker trucks from The Motor Truck Company for $1,070,631, citing urgent operational needs and a 120‑day delivery for stock units versus much longer waits for custom builds. Staff warned that the apparent $289,000 difference between CIP allocation and purchase price does not automatically translate to savings because additional upfitting and inspection costs remain.
Board members emphasized the operational benefits of getting units in service sooner rather than waiting for custom units, and the votes to award both contracts were recorded as unanimously in the roll calls.
