La Porte council backs state effort to let cities offer voter polling-location choice on election day

The council adopted Resolution 2025-23 directing staff to pursue legislative authority that would allow municipalities the option to permit voters to choose polling locations on election day rather than requiring precinct‑based voting. Staff explained that Texas law currently allows vote centers for counties but not for cities that run their own elections.
"In a vote center county, a voter can vote at any of the polling locations during early voting or on election day," staff explained, and the proposed resolution would ask the Legislature to extend that option to cities so they could choose to offer it. Councilmember Martin moved for adoption, and the council voted to approve Resolution 2025-23. Staff said they would coordinate with the Texas Municipal League and meet with legislators in advance of the 2027 session to seek support for the change.
