Board weighs angled parking and raised crosswalks on State Street

Board members discussed a potential reconfiguration of State Street to add angled parking and slow traffic near downtown. The chair said the agency met with city staff and ACHD, and that ACHD “thought that the crosswalk … would be wise to have it raised to create a little bit of a rumble strip, kind of a slowdown type of thing.”
Members spoke in favor of pursuing detailed plans: suggestions included pulling the center turn lane east, leaving about six feet behind parking stalls to improve visibility when cars back out, and exploring parallel parking on the opposite side to signal a parking environment. The chair and another commissioner will meet with the police chief, fire chief, and the mayor at 11:00 a.m. for safety feedback. The board asked staff to obtain survey bids and to research license agreements with property owners before bringing a construction-ready plan back to the board.
