McIntosh County adopts 90-day extension of Hog Hammock moratorium

The McIntosh County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Feb. 20, 2026, to adopt Resolution 2026-4, extending the county’s moratorium on rezonings, development permits, building permits, land disturbance permits and subdivision plats in the Hog Hammock District for 90 days. Commissioner Roger Lotson moved the resolution and Commissioner Davis Poole seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
The public hearing on the extension opened at 10:02 a.m. and included speakers who urged protecting the Gullah Geechee community on Sapelo Island while staff and commissioners refine zoning and planning approaches. Chairperson Catherine Pontello Karwacki explained the resolution before the vote. The moratorium is intended to pause permitting activities for the Hog Hammock District to allow time for additional review and community input.
