County social services staff begin five-year community needs assessment; schools to include middle school students

Dinwiddie County staff said Aug. 20 that the county is starting the planning year for its five-year community needs assessment, which informs social services, juvenile services and local schools about youth risks and resource needs.
The staff member said the county used the CDC Youth Risk Behavior Survey in previous cycles and will reuse core modules addressing bullying, weapons, substance use, mental health and physical activity. The school board agreed to include middle school students this cycle in addition to high school students. Staff described a planning meeting scheduled for Sept. 10 to finalize scope and roles with the school system and community partners, with data collection expected in the 2024–25 school year and a draft report in mid-2025.
"We will have focus groups, key informant interviews and social indicator data for comparison to 2020 results," the presenter said, noting prior survey participation levels and opt-out procedures for parents.
