VDOT update: Hardaway's Mill reopened; county and VDOT discuss mowing cycles and West Petersburg sidewalks

VDOT said milling and paving operations on Route 1 are wrapping up and that a research project on fiber-reinforced asphalt is being used on a portion of Route 1 between the traffic signal and the Petersburg line. Hardaway's Mill is open and bridge recoating on the I-85 northbound structure is scheduled, involving sandblasting and protective drapery. The official said primary mowing had begun and that the residency intends to issue a notice to proceed for secondary mowing within two weeks using contracted forces.
Supervisors raised repeated concerns about Johnson grass along secondary roads and at on/off ramps, noting safety and sight-distance issues: "We typically do three cycles a year," the VDOT presenter said. A supervisor asked about sidewalks in West Petersburg; VDOT staff said sidewalks are not part of maintenance projects and would require county initiation via the six-year plan or pursuit of TAP/smart-scale federal grant funding.
