Sheriff Tony Helms presented information from Messer Financial Group on a health plan designed for jails and correctional facilities that he said is being used successfully in Covington County.
Helms described that the plan can be offered only to pre-trial inmates and that if the inmate is not sentenced they may keep the insurance after release. He said the out-of-pocket deductible could be billed to the jail up to a maximum of $9,000 while the inmate remains incarcerated. Sheriff Helms also provided operational statistics for October: 705 calls for service, 299 orders served, 113 traffic stops, 10 court attendances and nine prisoner transports.
