EMA director says half of Geneva County sirens inoperable; commission to press vendor

EMA Director Brian Smith told the commission that about half of Geneva County’s weather sirens are currently inoperable and that the system remains on older analog equipment that may not reach all sirens reliably. Smith said he has had trouble getting S&P Communications to respond on maintenance and that he is exploring other vendors; he also said he is searching for a bucket truck to perform repairs and that many counties are moving toward mass-notification systems because siren range can be only about one mile on a clear day.
Commissioner Bart Wilks moved and Commissioner Wade Fulford seconded a motion authorizing County Attorney Phil Eldridge to send a letter to S&P Communications regarding continued billing for services the EMA director says are not being provided. The motion passed 2-0. The minutes record discussion about whether to continue investing in sirens versus modern notification systems; no final policy shift was adopted at the Oct. 15 meeting.
