Commission awards Hot Asphalt bid to Southeast Construction; engineer proposes expanded FY2025 paving

The Geneva County Commission on Aug. 26 voted 4-0 to award the Hot Asphalt Plant Mix contract for the FY2024 Rebuild Alabama paving project to Southeast Construction, the lowest of three bids at $709,271.25. The other bids were Wiregrass Construction at $785,133.25 and APAC Southeast at $982,895.00.
County Engineer Justin Barfield told commissioners the pricing "came in substantially lower than the past few years," and said that trend could allow the county to add more miles to future paving lists. The commission then discussed and approved a preliminary FY2025 Rebuild Alabama paving plan that includes 5.2 miles on County Road 64 (Bellwood west to State Highway 27) and 3.4 miles on County Road 91 (Slocomb city limits south to Post Oak Road). The decision passed on a 4-0 vote.
Barfield also briefed the commission on a separate MPO-funded paving project scheduled to LET next spring or early summer on County Road 68 from the Houston County line to County Road 49; that project will require a county match estimated at $285,000.00. Barfield emphasized coordination between MPO and county projects when scheduling letting and matching funds.
