The Geneva County Commission on Aug. 12 approved a Solid Waste rate increase from $14.00 to $18.00 per month, effective Jan. 1, 2025, by a 3-1 vote. County Administrator Cindy Williams told commissioners the Solid Waste Department is the county's only enterprise fund and recommended the increase "to stay in the black and be in line with surrounding municipalities and counties."
Commissioner Weston Spivey made the motion and Commissioner Bart Wilks seconded. The commission also agreed that customers who have prepaid service as of the meeting date would not see the higher rate until their prepayment period ends. Commissioners discussed but did not approve outsourcing collection during the meeting; the mayor of Hartford has asked the county to consider taking over the town's garbage pickup and the Solid Waste Director was asked to prepare feasibility information. The motion passed 3-1 (one commissioner opposed).
