Elko County partners outline tabletop, decontamination and evacuation drills ahead of fall season

Elko County emergency partners described multiple preparedness exercises intended to sharpen response for hazmat, wildland‑fire and mass‑casualty scenarios. James Johnson, City of Elko Fire, said the county ran "a one‑day drill with the CST, the 92nd out of Carson City and with the Elko Bomb Squad" covering decontamination procedures and monitoring equipment; he said the curriculum will be spread across the year and dates will be distributed to partners.
Mike Herbaletti of Ormat said the Tuscarora plant held an emergency action plan drill that focused on whether a wildland fire would require plant evacuation. "Everything, you know, everything obviously went well," he said, adding the drill included a preplanned phone call with regional dispatch and produced lessons learned. Jen Tingle of Convergent Health said the surgery center updated its hazard vulnerability analysis and "we will be running probably a tabletop exercise" simulating a derailment hazmat scenario; she said she will send invitations to the chair and fire chief and coordinate a date.
The committee also noted statewide and regional training opportunities: a September Zoom class on preparedness for aging populations, a Pershing County hazmat functional exercise in October, a Region 3 integrated preparedness event Oct. 21–23, and a wide‑area search course in Winnemucca Oct. 24–26. Organizers urged agencies to register and indicated additional local tabletop and earthquake scenario planning is expected in the fall.
